ST ALBANS CHILDREN'S BOOK GROUP
The book group is part of the National Federation of Children's Book Groups. Our aim is to encourage enjoyment of children's books among youngsters of all ages - and their parents! We have around forty individual members, plus several of the local primary schools, and are always on the look out for more book enthusiasts to join us.
Children are always excited to meet authors and illustrators. Our book events in schools give them this opportunity. In recent years children have enjoyed meeting Jeanne Willis, author of the Dr Xargle books and Shoo Rayner, illustrator of the Mudpuddle Farm series (among others). These afternoons also feature storytelling, craft activities, competitions, and a wide selection of children's books for sale.
In addition to the Saturday events in schools, book group members hold weekday coffee meetings, specifically geared to parents and under-fives. We have evening meetings, sometimes with a speaker. There is also the opportunity for children to test books for the annual Children's Book Award.
Annual membership of the book group costs £9. This includes a subscription to the excellent Carousel magazine - published three times a year - and the Federation of Children's Book Groups newsletter. Carousel is a superb guide to children's books and other media.
